We elect electors. (And no, I don't consider the Electoral College to be an outdated institution.)

I elect a President based on how enthusiastic he seems to be to carry out laws I think are important; I elect a legislator based on how likely I think he is to make or support such a law. I don't expect a candidate to carry out promises made during a campaign, because I'm aware of how little control the President has over the legislative process. And I'd prefer to see the President have as little control as possible over the legislative process.
