Last weekend, in Sankt Augustin near Bonn, Germany, a conference on "Free and Open Source Software" was held. (FrOSCon). I arrived the day before, so I thought that I could volunteer as a helper.
Was a lot of work. The work included carrying around tons of barrels of beverages, preparing meals on Saturday evening for the hungry crowd, doing video recoding during the talks, helping desperate visitors, and a lot more. Crazy as it sounds, I liked it. Made a feeling that I had done something which made a difference. I received no pay, only free food and drink, but I didn't do it for the food and drink. I did it to help there.
BTW, as a volunteer, I had access to the VIP rooms, and I had the unforseen opportunity to chat with Dries Buytaert (the founder of the Drupal project). Another very welcome side-effect. |
