Think of it like a pie. Going downtown would be like starting at the outside edge driving to the middle and then out again at about a 120 degree angle. I-265 would be the outside of the pie. I-265 DOES swing way out and then back in on the East side so the distance may end up being a little longer. However, the speed limit is higher (65 mph on I-265 vs 55 mph on on I-65 in Louisville) and there is repaving on I-65 during evening and weekends right now. And if you go downtown, 3 major highways (I-64, I-65, I-71) all meet in Spaghetti Junction (aptly named) and are pinched in one one side by the river. If you're not familiar with the exits and traffic flow, it can be a little intimidating. I'd take I-265E around and pick up I-71E in the east end. FYI, I-71 "starts" (or ends) in Louisville at Spaghetti Junction.
Whichever way you go, you can still wave as you go by. The Preston Hwy exit is maybe a 1/2 mile away from I-65 at that point. By the time you finish merging onto I-265, you're at the Preston exit. |
