you need a faster car.
No, really. I now buy cars with the expectation that I will NEED to accelerate briskly in order to merge appropriately/safely because people here in NorCal, for the most part, simply cannot drive properly in certain circumstances (*). I usually accelerate to speed of traffic + 15% or so and then lightly brake to find the right merging spot. If I'm right behind someone on the ramp driving slowly, I'll slow down until there's a gap between us and I can accelerate to near-traffic speed by the time I hit the end of the merge ramp.
Sure, I'm not as environmentally friendly as the next guy, but I do know how I felt the few times I had to merge in an underpowered car. I've rarely been in as much danger when accelerating to a little MORE than traffic speed. That's one reason I insisted on at least the 3.8L in wifey's Dodge Caravan. The 3.3L is way too underpowered for such merging. Ok, 300+hp in my DD is probably overkill :-)
YMMV.
(*) driving in a large urban area is difficult at the best of times. But, in several years of commuting in and around Toronto, I never saw anything like the insane rubber-necking that happens here (East-South Bay, CA) on a daily basis. Simply put a car with its hood up on the side of the road, and traffic speed will drop 30-50% and everything will grind to a halt. Just because one person stopped on the side of the road. It's (*&@#(*$&@# maddening to those of us trying to get home. |
