very nearly right, except that you're saying everything wrong. The ideal is to have a market for currency, where people do indeed trade in whatever medium of exchange they find valuable and convenient. The barrier is legal tender laws, which say that you must accept currency X as payment, coupled with the ability to print unlimited amounts of X.
