I can't imagine how Jackson could make the film that follows many of the details of the original without getting any of the flavor. And Jackson has a horrid disregard for continuity or "reality" within the worlds he creates. It's mentioned elsewhere, but I'd also throw in Dante's Peak. And Volcano. And The Day After Tomorrow. All of the disaster pics had great potential for entertaining shows, but were just so darned stupid with their facts and so-called science.
