Veggies, beans and water or stock in a crockpot. It'll feed me for 8 meals for just a few bucks. Thicker soups/stews can be served over noodles or rice. Lots of tasty inexpensive soup recipes here: http://www.all-creatures.org/recipes.html The grocery store in my area has a "dented" fruit/veggie section that usually yields some good soup or stock veggies and fruit for smoothies. The other thing which has worked wonders for me to control grocery expenditures is to set a budget amount for a month's groceries, then put that amount of cash in an envelope. Use that envelope only for buying groceries. Once the cash is gone, that's it for the month. For me, it was harder to stick to an exact budget for food if I just used my checkbook.
