Every civilization on earth has created their own standards of justice, mercy, honour, duties and traditions. It seems to result emergently from the interactions of sufficiently big brains and a method of storing memories externally (song/poem/dance through to written words) - call this EXtelligence.

Someone from a culture may well try and maintain the culture they were programmed with when alone. I believe if people were in a "feral" group without the ability to form language and extelligence, then mercy, justice, honour and all the rest would not form.

This is my belief. I am probably a decade out on the science (as anyone who doesn't read the journals in that field automatically is) but it's a good enough story to fit into my mart of extelligence and help me make sense of things much bigger than I am.
