Not quite the UF Philosophy Corner by MatthewDBA2009-05-12 09:02:00
Nature has given us two conflicting sets by Peace_man 2009-05-12 10:07:09
of motivations.

Since we evolved as a social animal, we have concern for our fellow humans. We feel the need to help them that they may help us in turn. We are motivated by compassion and empathy.

Since evolution favours the fittest, we compete with each other within the above social setting. We strive to be seen as superior, we do what we can to bring the status of others down, to eliminate the competition.

Seeing only one set of motivations will always be wrong. Predicting which set will take precedence in any given situation is not reliable.
