If you slip & have to put a hand down on the utensil rack, having the knife blades pointing DOWN will keep you from having to go to the Hospital & have your hand sewn back on...
Make sure all the loose food is scraped off before you put anything in the dishwasher.
Put the heavy stuff on the bottom, the light stuff on the top, and be sure to check the plastic containers before you put them in AT ALL.
(Some of them aren't dishwasher safe, or if they are, they're "top rack only".)
Don't over-load the poor thing - if you can't move the rack with two fingers easily, you may have too much in it.
(If there's not enough room between objects, the hot water & soap may not get there & you'll have to run the load again.)
But, on the other hand, try to run it as full as you can so as to not waste electricity, water, or dish washing liquid.
And last but not least, it is NOT appropriate to put your rats in there & make them "RUN! RUN FASTER! MUH HA HA HA HAAAAAA!"
*cough*
