Make sure to scrape the food off the dishes before putting them in there. Use "dishwasher" soap - not Dish soap. Make sure the dishes in it are clean before you take them out and use them. Corrolary - don't put dirty dishes in with the clean ones. I think that covers all my personal learning experiences with dishwashers (and other people in the house)
