          Use RTV to glue the gasket to the housing by turambar 2009-05-08 14:13:46
and then put a little RTV on the gasket/mounting faces before going to install it. If you don't want to use RTV then a little bit of vaseline or grease should do the trick... motor oil might even work. Just find something to hydro-lock the gasket onto the T-stat housing. I have had similar type situations where a little bit of water was sufficient to hold the seal I kept dropping in place; THAT was with a big flat rubber washer and a PVC compression fitting though, much different surface dynamic.
