has been that one of the most important skills in programming is the ability to look at a mess of code written by someone who didn't really know what they were doing, pinpoint the one thing that's going wrong, and fix it without (a) breaking anything else or (b) redoing the whole thing from scratch - tempting as it may be.

Pointers are something I never really "got," I have to admit. On the other hand, I wasn't a CS major; I was a theoretical math major and we got our mental agility in our own peculiar way :-) And I definitely got the concept of pointer when I was taking my assembly language class.
