But it's also socially, and often legally, frowned upon. Look at Edison and what he ripped off. Look at Microsoft. It DOES work, but you have to be a serious player to be able to do it and get away with it. Unless you're an Edison or a Microsoft, you're likely going to pay through the nose. And sometimes, even that doesn't help (look at the case involving the 802 standard that was recently finished).
