to develop a measure of the relative difficulty of using various methods? The best reason I could think of for using these methods is that they are highly efficient - it would be interesting to measure the efficiency of this method at fulfilling these needs, if it were possible.

But if these methods were so highly efficient, wouldn't they be significantly preferred by everyone (in contrast to your statement that "not everyone uses such methods")?
