But if the consequences of change are not thought out, bad things can happen. Neither slavery nor denying women suffrage make no sense if thought about logically. The reasons for them just don't hold up.

In Lincoln's day, they had actual debates on slavery, not sound bites. They attacked each other's arguments instead of repeating themselves. That doesn't happen much these days in the mainstream. Same sex marriage is becoming a house of cards and policymakers need to apply reason in one direction or the other before it falls down. Reason, by the way, seems to be in favor of same sex marriage. They're just not digging down deep enough to remove the false premises the arguments against are based on.
