Yes, I think there would be a small amount of uproar. Especially among those who are dealing with spouses who are very ill and/or dying - how do you think they would react if all of a sudden, they were not allowed to see their loved ones anymore, or make treatment decisions for them, or be denied pension benefits as surviving spouses, or make funeral arrangements for them?

There are established protocols in the medical, bureaucratic and funereal communities that give spouses preferential treatment before any other blood relative.
