Serious question for those against gay marriage. by Snate2009-04-15 12:37:15

does not indicate your personal orientation. Sorry. I know plenty of same sex couples (of BOTH genders, BTW) who are parents, and not just by adoption.

As far as marriage goes, I strongly believe in equal treatment for all citizens by the government. It goes beyond inheritance (and even a will or a company/partnership distribution can be contested by "blood relatives" after death). There are other rights and privileges that are afforded to spouses that are not afforded to any other pair of people.

And the only reason a dissolution would be easier from a civil contract standpoint would be if absolutely everything were spelled out ahead of time (i.e. a very detailed prenup). If not, then the separation is more difficult.

For example, my brother and his then girlfriend (both lawyers) decided to purchase a house together. The contract they wrote up was *14 pages long* and that was just to divide the one real property in the event that the relationship ended (which it did, BTW).
