Part of the issue is "Marriage" is a "charged" word and "civil unions" is a neutral one. You can tell this because obviously people start getting hot over how you define marriage but have kinda let "civil unions" just slide in there.

So you can get rid of the terms marriage if you want and add blessed union, or if you outright try to pass laws that "OH MY GOD REDEFINE MARRIAGE" and get all the people riled up.

IMHO what you do is remove the words that have meaning, put in neutral alternatives. And make everyone suffer the same fate under the law without trying to "define" the words that make everyone get hot under their collars. Let the religious institutions call things what they want.

Put another way, why should the GOVT have two words that mean the same thing. And if you say they shouldn't MARRIAGE should be both. Why not fight to put in something neutral, rather than something that will cause significant opposition?
