Serious question for those against gay marriage. by Snate2009-04-15 12:37:15
My thoughts, as a neutral by Sonri 2009-04-15 13:16:15
I'm going with a neutral view for the moment. My religious beliefs are my own and my personal orientation is pretty obvious at this point, seeing as I'm expecting a child. However, part of my religious and personal beliefs include a very strong belief in separation of church and state. Basically, if the dominate religion of where I am is not what I believe personally, I don't want those values inflicted on me. State religion should not exist, in my mind.

My never-ending curiosity being what it is, I had the opportunity to speak with one with an interest in the matter, and I asked some questions. I prefer to not be completely uninformed if forced to vote on the matter.

Their viewpoint is two-fold, from what I understand. One is of course the formal declaration stuff. (I'm not delving into that.) The second is for legalities. Consider regular marriage. In most states I'm aware of the laws in, the spouse automatically inherits should something happen to one of them and no children are present. Apparently, the law does not allow inheritance among m/m f/f relationships. In order to secure proper inheritance, they have to form a business incorporation or partnership of the two of them.

I figure if there was a way for them to do this inheritance thing legally, maybe the issue wouldn't exist as much as it does. However, the humorous part of me has to acknowledge that separation/divorce is easier with the business incorporation thing. Maybe they could just call it something other than "marriage" if that's what the religious people need. Some will never back down on the issue, seeing it as a threat no matter what.

However, from a neutral viewpoint, I can see where both groups stand. I don't know the answer, but maybe the above information will be useful to you as it was to me. I may not have all the information, as it wasn't a long conversation.
