It's crap that's been perpetuated by right-wing talk radio for over 25 years. The one thing they do right is stay on-message. Democratic politicians != Democratic voters and liberals != Democrats. Liberals != (!conservatives). I reject the whole online-axis theory of political opinion, because it's tailor-made to make everything a "this or that" battle assuming only two possible answers to every question.
That's not reality. There are many, many more sets of opinions making up people's ideologies than just "are you conservative or liberal?" By trying to simplify the debate to that black-or-white, on-or-off, yes-or-no, with-us-or-against-us level, conservatives are simply polarizing people and getting them mad about entire groups of people who don't exist.
And if the intermessage had been "when reality intrudes, utopia generally takes a hike", I wouldn't have had a problem with it.
But it's making the assumption that she's a liberal. It's making the assumption that liberals are all idealistic, utopian, out-of-touch ninnies, and that's simply not the case.
I understand the other viewpoint. I agree with the other viewpoint; that guns are necessary to maintain order, because the only ones who don't have guns when they're banned is lawful citizens.
The message jumps away from talking about the girl and makes a statement about a broad group that is always the target of right-wingers' derision. It does not fit in, unless you assume that liberals are against guns, and anyone not a gun enthusiast is a liberal. Only if you make that leap of circular logic does it hold together.
We're going to have to agree to disagree on this. It's out of scope, but perfectly in line with the rest of DR66's type of posts: "Liberals are all silly. Let's laugh at them."
And the point you're missing more than anything I might be missing is this: I said that overall, I liked the article. I just felt the one statement didn't need to be there, and took away from the article by making a political statement. |
