I think that you have a point but are not seeing by Classic_Jon 2009-04-10 15:31:37
the point being made in the article with that statement and why it was made in the total of the articles statements.

I think it was more meant about the GIRL in the article and not anything else. Does she not say:

"Conflict

"I can't believe I'm here. **I've been against guns and violence my whole life.**"

I let this pass. **Now is not the time for a self-righteous lecture.**

Intertitle: UTOPIA IS THE OPIATE OF LIBERALS.

"Did Ned threaten you, physically, I mean?"

"Said I belong to him and no one else. That's about it. But I know what he means."

I see what you are saying and, you are correct that people should be working to come together BUT you also seem to miss the point being made because it appears to me that "liberals" is a hot button for you and it made it hard to see why that was put there in the big picture.

It is a generalization stating that as a whole, most people that are anti-gun are of the liberal political persuasion. Now, before I go further, ask yourself this: is that a true statement or not? In going with the theme of the article, we will say it is true, OK? Then the statement is made in a manner saying that THE GIRL in the article is of the stereotypical outcome of what most people would consider a standard "liberal" mindset in that she said "I can’t believe I’m here. **I’ve been against guns and violence my whole life.**"

In my view, it is not speaking derogatorily or in a divisive manner but is going with the theme and mood *already set* with the other generalizations made at the beginning of the article. it is part of what some would call "setting the stage." Could it have been done without it, I will agree that it could have been BUT, it fills out your picture more of the Typical mindset of a person like the girl in the story.

When I go into a gunshop I see it all the time where a person who, like the girl is saying "I can’t believe I’m here. **I’ve been against guns and violence my whole life.**" But, as the title of the article says, when reality intrudes, utopia generally takes a hike.

IMO, taken as a whole, the statement fits the theme and the intent of the story. Taken as a hot button item, I can see where seeing the word "liberal" could be taken differently. I suggest that you re-read the story and try to leave personal bias out of it and read it for contend and *intent* and not be affected by what you see as a loaded word. :)

Upon rereading it think about this, you said in your post above "To borrow a phrase, don't be a divider...be a uniter." and to do that...you need to understand the other viewpoint.
I also think you toally missed something very important in the story!! If you *really read* the article, you will see that the person telling the story does NOT work at the shop. The fact that he says "I’m waiting my turn." and later "Sounds crazy, I know, thing is—do you think the salesmen are going to be much longer?" and last "But we’ll see what the salesman have to say, they are the experts here, okay?" Seems to bear that thought out.

Seriously, take a deep breath and re-read it in light of that info and it should come across a bit differently. :)
