about a half dozen of them from the beginning of the series is about the right amount. After a while, a certain amount of formulaic nature takes hold, and then (in what I have always viewed as an attempt to fix some of the problems and break out of the mold that had come to dominate the books) the whole thing takes a turn that is jarring from my point of view. Or, if the flavor of the first few isn't to your taste, then jump ahead to the last three or four. One thing that I will say for McCaffrey is that she's pretty good at making books able to stand on their own without needing their predecessors to prop them up.
