Well, it was before PC's and small computers, but we did find a strange cable running from the back of one of our comms units, buried in a nest of other cables. It wasn't labeled (now, we all label all of our cables, don't we boys and girls)which was in itself suspicious.
It ran to a modem (remember them) which had been taped to a fold in the iron work supporting the false floor. The modem was black. The tell-tale lights had been covered with black duct tape. We had a stealth modem on our hands! It was connected in to a phone line used by the mainframe to phone home when it needed help, so it never expected to receive incoming calls. Only the modem would answer.
After lots of investigation (the juicy details I will spare you all) we found that an ex-operator wanted to be able to continue to play his game on the mainframe after he left!!!
