and created a biological imperative for survival of the species - by the creation of the sex drive and the desire to have children - there would not *be* a humanity.

Earth's biosphere is set up as a competitive organism. This means if we don't outcompete our competitors, we die out. (Example: Neaderthals)

Because of our unique genetic advantages (rational capabilities, language, social co-operation on a larger scale than any other animal) we are equipped to be "top of the heap". And we have been top-of-the-heap for so long that we've forgotten as-a-race-when-speaking-in-language what we had to go through to get to the top of the heap.

But the genetic traits are much more long-lived than that. And those traits are set up to ensure the species' survival. It's built into our genetic programming as a necessity - and the conservation and enhancement of the efficacy of those genes has been a top priority of natural selection for even longer than there has been a humanity.
