Ethics does get into the "why" of relating to people in a certain way; it needs to, in order to explain how to arrive at a "how to". Historically, the main answers that Western ethics have given to why one should do something are "Because it gives you happiness" (hedonism), "Because it's helpful for you" (utilitarianism), "Because it's your duty" (deontological ethics) and "Because that's what humans are designed to do" (virtue ethics).
