UF Philosophy Corner: Ethics by MatthewDBA2009-03-31 07:55:43
I'm not sure where ethics enter into this issue. by Peace_man2009-03-31 09:53:32

      Hmm - I think I see. by Peace_man 2009-03-31 10:39:25
I thought of ethics as mainly being concerned about what NOT to do - such as harming others. But I can see that ethics come into the question of what one should do to help others as well.

As such, I would think that ethics mainly enter the picture in isolated cases; how to respond to a request for help, or how to react to an obvious case of need. And they deal more with reactions to specific situations, not with choosing pastimes or hobbies.

Since the choice of what to do with one's spare time is not a case of reacting to a specific situation, I again don't see ethics as entering into it. Unless you want to rank hobbies as to their ethical value. Assign importance or rankings to various pastimes to reflect the benefit they present to others. In which case we are faced with a very wide range of potential measuring guidelines. And can start debating such issues as whether artistic pursuits that can enrich people's soul is more important than technological pursuits that can enrich people's physical well-being. And you could span the entire range of assigned values from screaming head-banging noise exhorting racial genocide to the Viennese boys' choir in artistic pursuits. From development of an unstoppable viral agent that could potentially wipe out our race, to curing cancer or developing virtually free energy sources in technological pursuits.

You could have a lot of fun and discussion debating the relative merits and ethical values of any particular choice of hobby. Or vocation, if you want to spend all your time and not just your spare time in a particular pursuit. And IMO it would be futile. I don't think you could ever get any general agreement on values. You would simply end up with as many opinions as there are people on Earth, and possibly many more.

My opinion still stands. That as far as endeavors you pursue in your spare time goes, ethics doesn't enter into it. Diversity is a good thing; the only restriction on what is good and what is not should be based on whether it will harm others or not.

I'd say that in general by MatthewDBA2009-03-31 12:24:31
Yes, but isn't this mostly for those who don't by Peace_man2009-03-31 13:23:31
