UF Philosophy Corner: Ethics by MatthewDBA2009-03-31 07:55:43
I'm not sure where ethics enter into this issue. by Peace_man 2009-03-31 09:53:32
IMO everyone has their own interests. We have developed society and technology to the point where it is possible to pursue things other than what is necessary for immediate survival. Whether what we pursue is aesthetics, such as art in all its many forms, or long-range technology concerns such as this, is irrelevant. IMO it is important that individuals are able to pursue their own interests, so that we get a diversity of effort. I don't think we are wise enough to determine that any particular effort is what the future of our race depends on.

What would be ethically wrong is to prevent others from pursuing their interests, other than as those might harm people. Since we are a social animal, I'd expect people with similar interests to get together and pool their efforts; this is also a good thing.
