Hey, we're still using serial extensively in sports. You know when you're watching a game on TV, and they're fonting a game clock into the corner of the screen? Well, we're using serial cables and short-haul modems to get the proper clock data from the scoreboard controller (usually located courtside, right near the center of the action) to the television production trucks 500 feet away. We don't use ethernet because that would stutter too much. A nice, solid 9600 baud connection can give the proper score & time once every tenth of a second, with no delays.
Mind you, it's getting harder and harder to find notebook computers with built-in serial ports. USB-DB9 adapters work most of the time, but can be a little flaky and can require reinstallation or reboots. And usually at inopportune moments. |
