Why I am staying *AWAY* from SSDs! by jaqie2009-03-31 01:22:40

Definetely no replacement for *data* HDs yet. by aix tom 2009-03-31 03:01:01
It makes some sense to use a SSD as the Windows-drive or maybe for /usr and /lib on Linux system if you want a performance boost.

There a 10GB SSD should be plenty, and there are not much writes on those partitions. And it doesn't matter much if the die.

For big data partitions and/or partitions with lots of writes all the time I still would go for magnetic platters.

I could very well imagine that there will be more and more of a split into read-mostly SSD "OS" drives and read-write Magnetic "Data" drives in that direction in the next years or so.

Would also depend on how big the RAM gets. When /usr and /lib is already completely cached in the RAM, there is not much use for additional HDD performance there.
