tenets which are the foundation of arithmetic and geometry. If we don't take that as a workable hypothesis, then all that we build is opinion and the entire universe is untestable. Scientific progress collapses. We revert to superstition, which is just another word for societal opinion in the absence of facts.

The nice thing about this tenet is that it provides a workable framework for progress. It demands from humanity something more than faith-for-faith's-sake. Notwithstanding the ability of faith, it would not have produced the society we live in. Something more is required. That something is the scientific method. Its application is the source of all our capabilities in the observable universe - which is the only thing we can prove (using the scientific method) that we can affect.

Is the argument circular? Of course. Can we devise a method of testing this to resolve the situation? There is none of which I am aware. We don't know.

We do the best we can with the tools we can devise, in the calm foreknowledge that what we know today will be superceded by knowledge greater than our own. And while that is not a good enough rationale to answer the question - it is good enough IMO to allow for emotional and spiritual peace.
