application of the scientific method are opinion. There is a subset of opinions where - whether this particular subset of opinions are valid or invalid - is a decision imposed by humanity. And as such, these opinions are subject to review when scientific knowledge advances - such that experiments using the scientific method can now be devised in order to resolve these questions.

Once resolved, the results of the investigations move the opinion into the realm of fact. This removes the contention from the realm of opinion and we move on to the next contention we can examine from the point of view of moving that opinion from the realm of opinion into the realm of verifiable fact. This process repeats indefinitely.

However, because the requirement of society to be workable requires that we resolve a whole bunch of questions which cannot be resolved by application of the scientific method, we arbitrarily make decisions we hope are for the greatest good.

That we are humans, living in a probablistic universe, guarantees we are going to get it wrong sometimes. Which IMO, is the best argument I can give for the continuous reapplication of the scientific method to all questions humanity asks.
