New laptops generally run SATA in AHCI mode now, and it needs specific drivers to boot and load WinXP - might be able to change the mode in BIOS back to IDE emulation and get it to go with an XP CD slipstreamed to at least Service Pack 2, but you'll have to make sure the AHCI drivers are installed in XP before you switch it back in the BIOS.

I generally use nLite and make a slipstreamed install CD with the necessary chipset drivers already on the CD - use the same drivers that you would use to make an F6 third-party driver disk and tell nLite to stick them on the CD. nLite is fairly simple to use.
