Mileage tax vs. fuel tax - "Privacy? What's that?" by Twitchh 2009-03-23 08:03:34
"Americans have been encouraged for decades to purchase fuel-efficient cars to help the environment and to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Many bought into that, but since a national gasoline tax funds transportation infrastructure, drivers using less gas means less tax and, of course, less tax revenue.

So Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood suggested that instead of raising the gas tax, which hasn't occurred since 1993, it's time to start a mileage tax.

[....]

The first question is how are we supposed to accurately keep track of millions of automobiles and their annual mileage? Installing Global Positioning System devices was suggested." [Emphasis mine.]

Yayyyyyy! GPS transmitters in every car, not just "standard", but *mandated* if this goes through. Of course, our government (and its bureaucrats) would *never* misuse or allow to be misused any such database that could (will) be generated on not just how far you drive, but *everywhere you go*, right?
