Beyond that, you get to choose what language you want to pursue. A second language is mandatory up to Grade 10. Back in my day, the only choice was French. Now there's German, Italian, Japanese and of course the two major Chinese dialects, at least where I am.

If you want to get into a University, most require a second language up to Grade 12.
