We have knifes in the cafeteria, which are sharp and have a serrated edge, and we fully expect our pupils to manage using them for cutting only bread.

As long as the knife is legal under Danish law, they can bring their own if they want, too. Some do for peeling apples or oranges. Never caused any problems.

Had to confiscate three baseball bats once, though. The boys meant no harm, but they were fighting over who got to be in possession of the bats, so it seemed the safer cause to let them pick them up after class. If one of them had accidentally whacked a classmate with a bat that size, all kind of trouble would have ensued, probably starting with a cracked skull.
