Because if people hear or read these kinds of stories and just have a "Meh, nothing I could do, since I wasn't there, so why should it bother me?" attitude, then things won't ever change. It takes people getting pissed off and doing something about injustices in the world to make things better. It takes someone standing up and saying "This is wrong and I'm not just going to sit idly by and do nothing about it." to make improvements in our world. It's true that you can't influence the past, but you can help to bring about justice for the past, and you can influence the future. So, yes, it's worth getting mad about things you didn't witness when those things are horribly wrong.
