An HR rep spends about 10 seconds on a CV by abaron 2009-02-10 11:47:45
before deciding to round file it or pursue it further. You have to ensure that in those 10 seconds they decide to pursue it further.

It sounds like such a pittance of time, I know, especially when you've likely spent 25 minutes just modifying your CV for that one job.

This is where layout comes into play. It should be easy to read, draw the readers eyes to the important info quick and convey an image of professionalism equal to the job you're applying for.

Why 10 seconds? Imagine they receive 200 CVs from a job advert. 10 seconds * 200 = 33 minutes of just looking through CVs, never mind any other job adverts or other work the person has to do. They certainly don't have time to spend a minute on each one.

Oh and you MUST sound confident, both in your CV and in other correspondence. If they hear confidence they'll be more likely to find confidence in your application.
