I'm in the midst of trying to hire a new assistant at my office. As you can imagine, I've received hundreds of resumes. What astounds me is how many of them contain obvious spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, or factual inaccuracies.

I mean, I certainly make my share of typos and mistakes. Everyone does. But on a resume? The last time I was job-hunting I gave my resume to a dozen friends / colleagues / advisers for proofreading and feedback. I felt confident that it was perfect, and I believe that it is what got me the job.

I'm trying to overlook formatting issues in e-mailed resumes, due to the differences between the sender's computer and my own computer (and I was amused when one poor soul chose a font that I do not have, so his resume came across in Wingdings). But spelling errors? I'm hiring for entry-level tech support; should I even consider people who don't care enough to use a spell-checker?

Or am I being too much of a grammar jerk?
