| Someone mentioned multiple views, and that could be part of the solution, but the problem here is that a given name server is either authoritative or not for a given zone. So if you want your names to live in example.com, your nameserver is going to have to be authoritative for all of example.com.
Another approach would be to ask your provider to do the heavy lifting for you, and create a custom view for queries from your local net.
If these approaches aren't feasible, I'd suggest sticking your local entries into a local hosts file, or breaking down and using a subdomain.
