I see people do it all the time, even when they're looking straight at the speaker. It's as if the words didn't even arrive at their ears. Sometimes, at best they'll just nod or snap out a dismissive "yep" (with "whatever" in between the y, the e and the p) so that they could carry on talking. I am, like you, a non-fan of people who hear but refuse to listen to other for whatever arrogant or narcissistic reason.
