The British rock group The Animals, with Eric Burdon, had a hit song in 1968 called "Sky Pilot" which was quite controversial in its cynical portrayal of military chaplains.
Sample of lyrics: ("they" = soldiers, "sky pilot" = military chaplain)
"In the morning they return
With tears in their eyes
The stench of death drifts up to the skies
A young soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot
Remembers the words:
"Thou shalt not kill"
Sky pilot.....sky pilot
How high can you fly
You never, never, ever reach the sky"
I was just reading about the sinking of a US troop transport on this day in 1943. Four chaplains gave their lifejackets to men without. Overcome by hypothermia, they slipped under the water, unbuoyed by the jackets that would have held them afloat until accompanying ships arrived.
"I saw all four chaplains take off their life belts and give them to soldiers who had none ... The last I saw of them they were still praying, talking and preaching to the soldiers," attested survivor Thomas W.Myers Jr. |
