They just run a couple of different versions down the production line.
There just isn't space for a socket of that size.

Sounds like the apple service department is a profit centre.

Do you have it in front of you? If the wifi is built in one of the stickers on the back should contain an FCC ID number, it'll probably starting with BCGA.
If you post that number I should be able to point you to pictures of the mobo.
