Commercial NAS solutions as a general rule are smaller, consume less power and produce less heat.

But if none of these are an issue, yes, it's cheaper to DIY*

[*] In most cases, there are some larger higher capacity (read 16 drives) commercial NAS solutions that are cheaper than building an equivalent enclosure yourself (3-in-2, 4-in-3 and 5-in-3 hotswap bays are RIDICULOUSLY expensive...)
