Someone doesn't like Windows. by Peace_man2009-02-03 11:36:53

I'm no Windows lover (in fact I run Mac OS by choice and XP by force.)

That said, I'm knowledgeable enough in Windows to realize some of the critical mistakes the author made. First, he get unrequested pop-ups but he clicks on them still?! He runs only one malware cleaner? He doesn't even run this one malware cleaner in safe mode?

These three mistakes will lead to cases exactly like his. Malware is designed to hide and to ensure pieces of itself survive so it can re-infect. Just like a convicted felon can evade an officer and dog malware writers will evade some scanners. Multiple scanners would have probably fixed this... but not with any certainty..

As for your question, nuking and re-installing, for the large corporations, is the easiest thing and the cheapest (short of not having to clean at all). Even if there are tools out there that will clean everything it will be faster to just restore an image of the OS and send the user on their way. Most companies have a (or should have)policy of not saving stuff to the PCs hard drive or backing up the users hard drive.

But is malware the trigger that will replace Windows in the corporate world? No, I don't think so. As evidenced by the recent finding of viruses in (illegal) copies of iWork and the like found on the net any system can get a virus. Malware will always be there as long as there is a way to profit from it. No matter how hard it's made to create malware someone will find cracks.

Windows will only be replaced in the corporate world when either the users clamour loud enough (unlikely) or the competing OSs offer significant advantages in time and money saving. The replacement OS needs to be more then "as good as Windows", it needs to offer something that will make hard core IT guys willing to learn and develop new workflows as well as something that they can sell to the bosses who know NOTHING about computers.
