Unpaid internships no longer unpaid. by Illiad2009-02-03 08:39:09
Well, an internship is supposedly a by Peace_man2009-02-03 10:20:08
Nope, you are buying a Name on your resume. by esbita 2009-02-03 10:47:43
People usually do not value anything that cost them little to nothing. Because of this, I highly doubt the companies involved will provide much in the way of experience. They don't have to; if you're working for free they might not bother find anything meaningful for you to do. The intern's idleness/under-utilization costs them nothing.

Getting a high powered internship is supposed to be a sign of either or both of these things:

1) You impressed a professor or another professional enough where they recommended you for the position (ideal)
2) You are of a sufficiently high social class where hiring you is a favor to your family, and you'll be able to bring in business contacts of your own in coming years (not ideal but sad reality).

Even so, it's the experience you have/gain that ultimately decides whether you remain in a job. If you have to *pay* to get an internship now I doubt the educational aspect will still be there, and the whole internship system might implode as a result. Which isn't bad in the long run but would suck for those stuck in the current system.
