When I was an undergrad in physics, after both my second and third years profs offered me summer jobs in their labs (I was a good student). I couldn't accept because I could get better money cruising timber in the interior and could live free in the family home on the weekends (slept in the bush weeknights). In retrospect, I regret not having taken those summer jobs in the labs - it very likely would have changed my career. However, we didn't have money for university and my immediate concerns were financial - I was worried about racking up student loans. (As it turned out, I graduated debt free.)
