My uncle is a bona-fide hero by mridenour 2009-02-03 05:33:32
I have an uncle who is captain in a volunteer fire department. They were recently at a house fire and he lost communication with one of the firefighters. He entered the building, a very dangerous situation as things were starting to collapse. He found the firefighter had been struck by a ventilation fan that had fallen through the ceiling. He was unconscious and not breathing. My uncle picked him up, carried him out of the building, and he and another firefighter performed resuscitation efforts until the first responders arrived. The fallen firefighter came out for the most part unharmed apart from some bruising and smoke inhalation.

The two rescuers were awarded the Medal of Valor by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association, only the sixth time in their 60+ year history that this honor has been awarded.

The rescued firefighter is the son of a former co-worker with whom I keep in semi-regular contact. When she found out that the rescuer is my uncle she asked me to tell him that he is her hero. :-)
