also would say the rest of the car is very longlived (my sister used to have a -93). Don't know about the automatic trannys (but VW's are usually good). But oil & filter changes are important. There shouldn't be any black smoke from the exhaust during full acceleration. Also check for rust, there shouldn't be any if the car is maintained at all. However the milage affects the price since no car lasts forever.
