Yesterday, finally went to a demo of the CAVE. "CAVE Automated Virtual Environment". Basically, it's a 'room', with 3 projector walls and the user wears 'shutter glasses'. These glasses sync the complex holoprojection on the walls with left and right eye orientation.
The result was... Unsettling. The 'magic' breaks when you look 'up' (where there is no ceiling, but for the lab) or 'behind' you, where there is no wall. But the three projection walls, and the shutter glasses make an impressive holographic projection of the model you're standing in.
So well actually, that it's difficult to see where a holographic wall stops, and a real one begins.. :P
I've also come to feel what 'cyber sickness' is. It's just plain weird when you're standing still, but the model moves sround you. It helps when you're in charge of the movements, but when you're not, you'll occasionally find yourself stumbling for footage, your brains trying to comprehend that your environment is moving, but you're not.
I've had an interesting talk with the operator of the CAVE, and maybe think about implementing something in there. It would be difficult though.. The operators aren't very keen on letting anything in there without scientific value. I have some ideas, but would have to think about the implementation.. |
